| Mitella breweri | Brewer's Mitrewort | Oaktown | ||
| Mitella breweri is a species of flowering plant in the saxifrage family known by the common names Brewer's mitrewort and Brewer's bishop's cap. It is native to western North America from British Columbia to central California (Sierra Nevada range) and Nevada, where it grows in moist meadows, woods, and mountain forests. It is a rhizomatous perennial herb growing up to about 30 or 40 centimeters tall. Most of the leaves occur around the base of the stem. They have rounded blades several centimeters wide and edges divided into dull toothed lobes. The erect inflorescence bears several flowers, sometimes over 50, usually along one side of the stem. The distinctive flower is saucer-shaped with five greenish petals which are divided into narrow, whiskerlike lobes. -CalScape | ||||

| Fruit: Feijoa sellowiana | Pineapple Guava, fruit | |||
| Pineapple Guavas are an ideal fruit tree for the Bay Area. Originally from the scrublands of Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina and southern Brazil, these non-tropical, evergreen trees are drought tolerant (though they need water to set fruit) and virtually disease and pest free. They feature large, showy flowers with edible petals; dense, dark green foliage; plus delicious fruit to boot. The aromatic fruit is ripe when it falls to the ground. Fruiting season, depending on cultivar, is from late September to early December. Pineapple guavas will grow to about 15 feet tall x 15 wide, but can be kept at any height or width by pruning. For a thick hedge, plant about 10ft.-15ft apart. Their dense foliage is ideal for screening out the view of your neighbors. These seedlings were grown from fruit of 9 cultivars that I found to be the best tasting out of a selection of over 25 cultivars that were developed by our West Coast expert, Mark Albert in Ukiah. Mark has been selecting trees for Northern California that have superior tasting fruit for about 40 years. The seedlings are from: Albert’s Pride, early fruiting, late September – October Albert's Supreme, late fruiting, November –early December Red Beard Clara North Moore, parent of Pride and Supreme Marion Lake Mendocino Drive Lake Mendocino Drive South T3 Elongated -Paul Borchardt - California Rare Fruit Growers |

| herb: Allium tuberosum | Garlic Chives, herb | |||
| Chives are a wonderful herb native to the Eurasian continent. The leaves have a sweet onion taste that is a great accent for many culinary dishes. Easy to grow in the ground or container the neat rich green foliage makes a lovely border or addition to your herb garden. Both leaves and flower are edible and they like a well draining and fertile soil. You can pinch the flower buds for more leaf production and if leaves look ragged in winter they can be cut back to the ground and will grow back in the spring. | ||||

| This English heirloom has for generations enjoyed a well-deserved place in American gardens. The thick stalks are bitter-free, deep red at the base and shading to green toward the leaf. Hardy throughout the continental U.S. but prefers areas with cooler summer weather. | ||||

| Celery is a wonderful, versatile vegetable originally from the Mediterranean region, which can be eaten raw or used in a variety of dishes ranging from salads to stuffing. This variety is known for producing a hearty crop in a relatively short amount of time and is prized for its sweet taste and non-stringy texture. Celery wants to be in full sun but can handle part shade, it needs consistently moist soil, and does not like to dry out. | ||||

| Lacto-fermenting is fairly simple; just cover with rainwater(1) or bottled water for a few days or aged tap water (a week or two to eliminate the chloramines) and allow the lacto-fermentation to convert the sugars into lactic acid while preserving and even increasing protien, vitamins and enzymes, improving digestibility: beneficial pro-biotics. The same as sauerkraut - easy and safe. In a few days the feed will smell like fresh sauerkraut and your chickens will devour it. Use this exclusively and your chicken's shit won't stink, supposedly ...or use it periodically for a healthy treat. (1) The sunflower seeds will float but you want to keep it all below water level to prevent mold with something like a French press coffee device. I cut some flexible plastic sheeting to fit a bucket with a rock strapped on top for weight and drilled holes for the filter. Here's an interesting article about feeding whole grain to chickens and about chicken feed in general. |
