Why We Created This Project --------------------------- We believe in the importance of making astronomy accessible to anyone that is interested; that the ability to discover more about our home, the universe, is a right and not a luxury; and that creating collaborative projects with diversity as a priority allows for greater advances in the field of science. The convergence of these ideas come together in the CHART project. Accessibility in our project is defined as affordability and ease in navigation. The CHART project guides novices and hobbyist alike in building their own radio telescope and taking data directly from the skies above at a price around $100. We have chosen every material used in this project carefully to insure low cost to the user and ease in locating that part over time. We have created step-by-step tutorials to build an optimized telescope and set up its hardware, so that the participants feel guided in completion of the project, rather than intimidated and discouraged. All of our code for this project is open source so that anyone can access and modify it for their personal subprojects and collaborative endeavors. Our main mission for this project is to empower participants from anywhere in the world to gain experience in the field of astronomy and increase diversity and participation in STEM. Meet the Team ------------- ### Ahlea Wright Code Development & Telescope Design Helped continue the CHART project in the summer of 2022 and worked on the final design of the telescope. Ahlea is an undergraduate student studying Computer Science and Bioinformatics at Winona State University. In the future, Ahlea wants to use technology to help others in the medical field. ### Lindsey Arndt Code Developement Continued the CHART project during Summer 2022. Updated the website, tutorials, and created the GUI and database for taking and storing data. Lindsey is an undergraduate student studying Computer Science, Human Computer Interaction, and Data science at Winona State University. Her future goals are to be a Software Engineer or User Experience Designer making technology more accessible. ### Dylan Gappa Simulation Dylan is using existing professional surveys to create a simulator for CHART. When completed, users will be able to create a mock data set to match when and where they observed. His future goals are to start a career in the civilian service of the military, working on aerospace technology. ### Bryanna Gutierrez-Coatney Project Leader Oversaw the project during Summer 2019. Created the website, tutorials, and helped with telescope design. Bryanna is an undergraduate student studying Astrophysics at Arizona State University. Her future goals are to be an educator in STEM and to create educational platforms that allow science and astronomy access to the general public. ### Shanika Davis Telescope Design Helped design the radio telescope along with characterizing the hardware. Her future goals involve designing and building electronics that will operate on spacecraft such as rockets, satellites, rovers or other robotics. ### Edgar Escalante Code Development & Telescope Design Helped develop the code to retrieve and read data from the radio telescope during 2018 & 2019. Helped in research and development for the project’s hardware. His future goals involve using his programming and signal processing experience to advance the field of astronomy. ### Belany Zhang Code Development & Telescope Design Helped develop the code to retrieve data from the radio telescope, created first draft of the website, and also wrote some tutorials for setting up the software for the project in 2018. Her future goals involve pursuing a career in the Artifical Intelligence or Cyber Security field of Computer Science. ### Emilie Berthiaume Code Development & Telescope Design Helped start the CHART project in the summer of 2018 and worked on the initial programming and design of the telescope. We’re preparing for the launch of Baby Child No. 1 in September. That’s not very far away anymore! Meanwhile, I’m trying to get as much stuff out as possible: * **Zettelkasten for Programmers Workshop.** Reach out if you’re interested. * **Plugin Editor for _The Archive_:** Plugins do run already. But where do you get them from? How do you create your own? I’m working on an editor that works inside the app. * **Reading:** One year in, I’m very enamoured with the Boox e-reader devices. I now have a small one at the bed to just read something. A larger one is amazing as a sketchpad and to work on scientific articles and PDFs! * **Drawing:** The _Bielefeld Urban Sketchers_ chapter now have a monthly meeting at a fixed place, and we meet about 3 times per month at the moment to draw and paint together. At the moment, I’m sharing pictures on Mastodon, there’s no public gallery, yet.

These are loose thoughts about the future: crazy ideas I'm mulling over, changes I wish to manifest, and interesting things I've noticed. My creative values ------------------ In the pursuit of a definite, intentional creative identity, I find myself drawn to these values for my work: * Enrich, don’t just distract * Have a fearless point of view * Embrace darkness, but inspire growth * Ideas have power regardless of whether they're true Audience -------- I want to make work for kind people. That’s too broad for any kind of real market positioning, but it’s a start. If an audience is a set of people you invite into your creative life, I don’t want to invite toxic, entitled, mean-spirited people. I want to invite kind people, who: * Understand the value of the arts * Find new ideas more interesting than dangerous * Feel in community with each other as members of this group of people who like this thing Independence ------------ I’d like to reach a point where I’m no longer beholden to an employer in order to live. That’s not just a luxury: I think it’s actually becoming a necessity in order for me to have the kind of lifestyle, and build the kind of identity, that I want to have. Assumptions ----------- We tend to assume the corporate career will be successful (financial stability) while the artistic career will be a failure (financial risk). Why do we make those assumptions? What does it take to disprove those assumptions? Making space for art -------------------- It feels like the way forward is less about figuring out how to make money by making art, and more about how to make money _while leaving space for art._ > This page was inspired by About Ideas Now

2024-04-28 * Thinking of buying some clear resin to see if my u/w magnifying math is accurate: I can 3D print the biconvex lenses, smooth the printing with spray lacquer, and get a _sense_. It won't be usable quality, I wouldn't think, but the curves aren't insane, even for a material with a lower refractive index. 2024-04-14 * My latest stupid idea is an underwater magnifying glass. Normal magnifying glasses don't work well underwater because seawater has a refractive index of 1.33 and common optical acrylics and glass are only ~1.50. There used to be a company in Belgium that sold an u/w magnifier for around $150 and you had to wait in line to get one, but they seem to have gone out of business. The math is pretty straightforward and so I've put an RFP out on Alibaba.

I’m Aaron… and I am all about where photography meets technology. Those are my two worlds and I’m excited to explore and share as they cross together whether we’re talking about photography on the web, social media, mobile photography, artificial intelligence, or other technical advancements in the world of imaging. Here’s the latest on what I’m up to right now? I love working with photographers individually or as groups to help them leverage modern technology to make more impactful images and develop more profitable, sustainable photography-related businesses. I do this via 1:1 consulting or speaking at events, either in-person or online. In 2021 I published The Computer Ate My Photos, a look at how artificial intelligence is shaping our industry today and into the future. A second edition is in the works. I’ve been working with computers and wandering the internet since the mid-1990s, back in the good old days of screeching modems and getting disconnected because someone else in the house picked up the phone. Then I got into the world of photography, first as a hobbyist and then as a professional. I’ve earned recognition through the Professional Photographers of America as a Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman (M.Photog.Cr.) and I’m a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP). In 2015 I was recognized for third place in the Commercial/Illustrative category at PPA’s Grand Imaging Awards, and went on to represent the United States at the World Photographic Cup. I’m currently the Vice President of the Professional Photographers of Washington, and I’m serving as a PPA Councilor representing Washington state through 2027. In 2017 and 2020 I served as President of the Oregon Professional Photographers Association. I’ve spoken to audiences of various sizes nationwide, and have been featured elsewhere in various media. **Everyone’s a photographer and it’s intertwined with tech. Aren’t these fascinating times?!**
