KCR wanted T-settlers out

April 19: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti president, Mr K Chandrasekhar Rao’s denial notwithstanding, he has always spoken of driving out people from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema if Telangana is made a state.
Mr Rao made scores of statements whipping up regional feelings. He has given a call to “settlers” — people from other regions of the state — to quit Telangana.
Most famously, Mr Rao questioned the sanctity of Telugu Talli, Mother Telugu, wondering where she had come from. “Evani Telugu Talli, ekkadi Telugu Talli (whose Telugu Talli is she, where has she come from),” Mr Rao said on October 5, 2006 in Hyderabad.
Telugu Talli is commonly accepted as the embodiment of Telugu culture, tradition, land and values. After Mr Rao’s attack, the TRS created Telangana Talli and installed statues in Telangana.
The TRS had threatened hotels offering “Andhra meals,” a common enough term for a wholesome meal. The party wanted the eateries to offer “Telangana meals” instead.
Mr Rao supported the agitation in June 2008 and issued instructions to hoteliers to remove food items identified with Andhra like idli, sambar and introduce ragi sankati and jonna rottelu, typical Telangana items.
As recently as on February 17, 2009, at Mahbubnagar said corporate schools and colleges run by people from Andhra would be closed if Telangana became a state.
“Capitalists of Andhra region have established these institutes on the pretext of providing quality education. They are exploiting parents in Telangana region,” Mr Rao said.
“Because of these institutions, local unemployed post-graduates, who set up coaching centres have been hit. We will close down all corporate educational centres set up by Andhraites,” Mr Rao had said.
The same day he declared at a public meeting in Shadnagar that when Telangana State is formed, he would not allow investments from non-Telangana regions unless they promised to give 70 per cent of the jobs to Telanganites.
At a meeting on June 29, 2008. Mr Rao talked about exploitation by “Andhra rulers.”
He described the Chief Minister, Mr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, as “jala donga (water thief),” a reference to certain water projects that fed water to Rayalaseema.
He alleged that people from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema were exploiting the natural resources of Telangana like water and minerals.

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrashekhar Rao has said that the only alternative left with the TRS to press its demand for separate Telangana was to create a political compulsion for other parties to take its help to come to power when the Lok Sabha and Assembly were reconstituted next.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday evening, Mr. Rao said the recent resignation by TRS members from Lok Sabha and Assembly placed the separate Telangana movement on a pedestal. . It was conceded by no less a person than Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee who went to the extent of regretting that Congress went back on the promise of creating separate State, Mr. Rao said.

The TRS chief added that the party would chalk out its future course at the executive meeting here on Saturday. He welcomed the statement issued by senior Telugu Desam leader Kadiam Srihari in support of separate Telangana and hoped many more leaders from other parties follow suit.

Earlier, slogan-shouting by supporters rent the air when Mr. Rao arrived at the Begumpet airport fresh from his resignation at New Delhi. The crowd displayed banners and flags. Naini Narasimha Reddy and T. Padma Rao, both MLAs, and K. Dilip Kumar, MLC, danced to the tune of music.

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) launched its five-day agitational programme ahead of the crucial vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha on July 22 by offering special pujas in the temples and other places of worship to mount pressure on Congress MPs from the State to impress upon the high command to concede separate State.

As part of the agitation, TRS leaders and cadres visited temples, churches and mosques in Telangana and offered special prayers. Reports reaching here said the Medak unit cadres offered prayers at the Bhavani temple in Sangareddy and later visited the Saint Mary’s Church to offer prayers. Prayers were also offered in the local dargah.

TRS legislator T. Harish Rao offered prayers at the Sri Venkateswara temple in Siddipet town. In Hyderabad former MLAs, Nayani Narasimha Reddy and T. Padma Rao led the party cadres to Sivalayam near Banjara hills.

In Adilabad, former Zilla Parishad Chairperson Ch. Suhasini Reddy led the prayers. Reports said the TRS workers performed puja at the famous Bhadrakali and Thousand Pillar Temples in Warangal, Ramalayam in Nalgonda. In Karimnagar, party activists and women cadres offered prayers and then went in a procession.

Sangareddy Staff Reporter writes: TRS Medak district unit and its mandal-level outfits offered prayed for a change of mind among Congress MPs so that they would stress for statehood to Telangana. District leaders offered prayers at Bhavani temple, Mary Matha church and dargah. They presented a chadar at the dargah.

Later speaking to media persons, Medak district leader Narahari Reddy said the party hoped that the prayers would give strength to Congressmen to demand Telangana in exchange for their support during trust vote.

HYDERABAD: After much dillydallying, the executive of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) finally took shape with a large body comprising 87 members. The party's previous executive was dissolved over 20 months ago and had only the president and three chief coordinators at the helm since then.

The new executive committee was announced jointly by TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Union Minister A. Narendra, amid scenes of jubilation by party workers here on Wednesday. It has 12 vice-presidents, 20 general secretaries and 52 secretaries. The presidents of ten frontal organisations of the party and conveners of 11 district units were also named.

The TRS chief also named the following as district convenors: A. Chandrasekhar (Ranga Rreddy), T. Padma Rao (Hyderabad), Mrs. M. Padma (Medak), E. Ravinder Reddy (Nizamabad), Soyam Babu Rao (Adilabad), Etela Rajender (Karimnagar), K. Pratap Reddy (Warangal), C. Laxma Reddy (Mahabubnagar), all MLAs, T. Vijaysimha Reddy, ex-MLA, (Nalgonda), Ponnam Muralidhar (Mancherial) and Talluri Venkateshwar Rao (Khammam). Adilabad district unit has been split into two -- Adilabad and Mancherial -- and given independent postings. All the earlier district presidents were dropped and local MLAs appointed in their place.

Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao told reporters the new executive would meet here on Friday to chalk out an agitation programme focussing on the `indifference' of the State Government to the party's demand for reducing the height of Polavaram project.

Describing the style of functioning of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy as "autocratic," he said he was doing injustice to Telangana by denying the region its due share of river water.

Dharna programme

The TRS chief announced that the party would stage dharnas in all district headquarters, except Adilabad, on October 17 to protest against implementation of GO 170 which aims at increasing the release of water to Rayalaseema from the Pothireddypadu head regulator. Adilabad had been excluded from the programme since the district would be celebrating the birth anniversary of tribal leader, Komaram Bheem, on that day.

He announced "Nalgonda Nagara" rally in Nalgonda town on October 28 to focus the Pothireddypadu issue. The creation of Telangana Jagarana Sena and the membership drive of the party would be completed in November, he added.

HYDERABAD: Amidst protests from groups that were denied tickets, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) on Wednesday released a list of 36 candidates for the Assembly elections.

A significant omission in the list was the sitting Alair MLA K. Nagesh who is replaced by K. Yadagiri Reddy, a non-local.

The party also did not announce candidature for any of the nine Lok Sabha seats. It shifted Hanamkonda MP B. Vinod Kumar to the newly-created Bhoopalpally Assembly constituency.

The list was released in three instalments by the TRS office. It was conveyed by party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his close aides who were closeted at an undisclosed location.

A large crowd gathered at the office created unruly scenes, including stone pelting, when names of their leaders did not figure in the list.

The announcement of the first list in the morning and the second in the evening was received angrily by supporters of candidates who aspired for tickets. The group led by Ramulu Naik, who aspired for ticket from Boath in Adilabad, mobbed TRS leaders who released the first list of 15 candidates in the morning.

The supporters of Muluguri Bixapathi, vice-chairman of Karimnagar Zilla Parishad, hurled stones on the office building as the candidature of Mr. Madhusudhanachary was declared in preference to the former from Parkal.

The crowds supporting Mr. Bixapathi and Takkellapalli Ravinder, an aspirant from Palakurthi in Warangal, staged half naked demonstrations in the office.

The Alair MLA Nagesh said he would decide his future course of action after meeting the TRS chief.

Warangal – B. Vinod Kumar (Bhoopalpalli), Kommuri Pratap Reddy (Jangaon), Atcha Vidyasagar (Warangal Eat), S. Madhusudhanachary (Parkal), D. Hyderabad – T. Padma Rao (Sanatnagar), M. Sudarshan Rao (Kukatpally), Nani Narasimha Reddy (Musheerabad), Devara Mallappa (Goshamahal) and K. Jagadeeshwar (Amberpet).

Ranga Reddy – A. Chandrasekhar (Vikarabad – SC), Uppal – Muttireddy Yadagiri Reddy and Maheswaram – Kusukuntla Prabhakar Reddy.

HYDERABAD: Seven MLAs of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and a few hundred party supporters staged an hour-long dharna in front the AP Transco/Genco office here on Tuesday demanding filling of posts in the utility serving the region only by locals.

Traffic disrupted

Disrupting traffic on the busy Khairatabad-Punjagutta road, legislators -- N. Narasimha Reddy, Padma Devender Reddy, T. Padma Rao, T. Harish Rao, S. Ramalinga Reddy, C. Lakshma Reddy and K. Nagesh -- shouted slogans before they were allowed inside Vidyuth Soudha where the two offices are located.

As APTransco CMD Rachel Chatterjee was away, the MLAs met Joint Managing Directors -- Harish Kumar (commercial) and M. Malakondaiah (vigilance). They handed over a memorandum listing the demands.

Mr. Narasimha Reddy and Mr. Harish Rao said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had earlier conceded their demand and assured them in the Assembly that the 100 posts of sub-engineers each in the Central and Northern discoms would be filled with Telangana candidates. They regretted that not a single member on the board of directors of the power utilities hailed from Telangana.
